American Visionary Art Museum
800 Key Hwy. (at the foot of Federal Hill), 410-244-1900

A museum deeply unusual in mission, the American Visionary Art Museum celebrates the work collectively known as "outsider art", pieces (often created out of everyday or found material, like bottle caps) by self-taught artists that rarely make it into the upper tier galleries. Included in the collection is a boat constructed of 193,000 toothpicks, an autobiographical work embroidered by a Tennessee woman locked away in a mental institution by her husband, and a 55-foot whirligig. Restaurant on premises is known for excellent food, Joy America Cafe. Call because hours change.

This late 18th century star-shaped fort is world famous as the birthplace of the United States' national anthem. The guardian of Baltimore's harbor, it was the valiant defense of Fort McHenry by American forces during a British attack on September 13-14, 1814, that inspired 35 year old poet-lawyer, Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner."
